NBTevo CarPlay — Full Guide

Everything you need to know about CarPlay activation and the ID4 → ID5/ID6 upgrade for your BMW's NBTevo head unit.

📺 What is the NBTevo Head Unit?

The NBTevo (NBT Evolution) is BMW's infotainment system found in many F-series and some G-series vehicles. It comes in different software generations — ID4 (oldest), ID5 (intermediate), and ID6 (newest). Each generation is identified by a version letter (e.g., F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q...).

CarPlay support was introduced in ID5 — starting from version J (splitscreen CarPlay) and version N (fullscreen CarPlay). If your NBTevo is still running ID4, you can upgrade it to ID5 or ID6 to unlock CarPlay and many other features.

✅ Which Software Versions Support CarPlay?

CarPlay support on the NBTevo depends on the software version (version letter and i-Step) installed on your head unit. Here's a general guide:


  • ID5 — Version J and newer — CarPlay is supported in splitscreen mode (€100 activation)
  • ID5 — Version N and newer — CarPlay is supported in fullscreen mode (€100 activation)
  • ID6 — All versions — CarPlay fullscreen is supported and can be activated (€100 activation)
  • Factory CarPlay option (SA6CP) — No WiFi antenna required, but coding and activation are still required to enable the feature
  • EntryNav2 with WLAN/WiFi antenna port — CarPlay can be supported if the unit has a WiFi antenna port; activation possible

  • ID4 — All versions (F, G, H) — CarPlay is NOT supported; requires the full ID4 → ID5/ID6 upgrade (€160)
  • ID5 — Versions before J — CarPlay is NOT supported; upgrade to version J+ or ID6 required
  • NBT (non-evo) — CarPlay is NOT supported; hardware limitation
  • EntryNav (original) — CarPlay is NOT supported; different hardware, no WiFi capability
  • EntryNav2 without WiFi antenna port — CarPlay is NOT supported; WiFi antenna port is required

🔍 How to Identify Your Software & Map Version

You can check your current NBTevo software version and map version directly from your car's iDrive screen:

📋 Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Start your vehicle and wait for the iDrive system to fully boot
  2. Press the MENU button on the iDrive controller
  3. Navigate to Settings → Software update
  4. You'll see your current software version — look for the version letter (e.g., F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q) and the i-Step number (e.g., "i-Step 17-03")
  5. To check the map version: Navigate to Navigation → Settings → Position & Orientation → scroll down to see the map version (e.g., "ROAD MAP EUROPE NEXT 2026-1")
  6. The ID generation can be identified by the interface style — ID4 has a simpler list-style layout, ID5 has a tile-based home screen, ID6 has a more modern tile-based interface with larger icons
Quick visual check: If your home screen has large square tiles with a dark background, you're likely on ID5 or ID6. If it has a simpler list-style menu, you're likely on ID4 and will need the full upgrade. Check the version letter — J or higher means CarPlay splitscreen is available, N or higher means CarPlay fullscreen is available.

🧰 What You'll Need for the ID4 → ID5/ID6 Upgrade

To perform the remote upgrade, you'll need the following equipment on your end:


  • A Windows 10/11 laptop with approximately 10GB of free space
  • An ENET cable (Ethernet-to-OBD cable for BMW)
  • A WiFi antenna — Chinese clone (€5-10) or OEM (~€30) for vehicles without factory-fitted antenna
  • A 64GB USB flash drive for the map data update
  • Not mandatory but highly advised: a car charger or a 2nd vehicle with jump leads to provide stable power to the vehicle while it's flashing
Important: The flashing process can take a significant amount of time. Ensuring stable battery power throughout the process is critical — a dead battery mid-flash can corrupt the head unit.
